We Can Do It ….

Join CLUW

CLUW (Coalition of Labor Union Women) is the national women’s organization within the labor movement. Our members are on the frontline, empowering workers to become leaders in their Unions and encouraging them to make a difference on the job and, most importantly, in their own lives. Our values are simple: Solidarity, involvement, dignity and justice.

CLUW is unique as it also accepts Associate Members.  Those are Members that do not belong to a Union but wish to participate with a Chapter.  We embrace all that wish to affiliate and have many male members as well that support the CLUW values and the female labor movement. Central CA CLUW is the most progressive Chapter in the United States with over two dozen male members.  One of CLUW’s founding goals is it’s commitment to using legislative action to create public policy that is favorable to working women and their families. Women make up 43 percent of Union membership, but they account for 48 percent of the total workforce.  Not every woman can go to college, and for those who work in the expanding service sector, Union membership can close the wage gap between workers with four-year diplomas and those without. CLUW helps promote Unionism and helps explain why belonging to a Union is essential for today’s working women.

CLUW local chapters educate members politically, keep them up-to-date on a variety of issues of concern to working women and families and provide a support network for women in Unions. This is very important. The Central Valley is the battleground for California, holding the swing vote. We need to see the fairness and equality standard applied in this particular section of CA politically…let us tell you!

CLUW also supports women politically partnering with the “She Should Run” campaign and offers support and resources for those Members seeking office.  Women run for office because they are asked. Women are 50% less likely than men to seriously consider running for office, less likely to actually run, and significantly less likely to run for higher office. However, research shows that when women do run, they win at equal rates to men.

The key to increasing the number of women in political power is asking more women to run.
